It’s Time to Rethink Toner

It’s Time to Rethink Toner

"Today’s toners aren’t the ones you used to use. The latest formulas are a must-add to your skin care routine."

Think back to your early teen years and the first skin care products you ever used. If you’re anything like us, a toner was probably in the mix, likely an intense, drying formula that left your skin feeling super stripped. If those early toner memories have put you off the category ever since, it’s time to rethink adding one back to your daily routine.

What is a face toner?

Here’s the thing: Toners have come a long way. The latest formulas are no longer harsh and stripping; instead, most are alcohol-free, pH balanced, and non-drying, meaning all skin types can benefit from using one. Why, you ask? Consider a toner an extra level of cleansing insurance. Obviously washing your face is the first step in removing dirt, oil, makeup, and other assorted grime. But even if you use the best cleanser and master the perfect cleansing technique, inevitably, some of that ‘stuff’ will still be leftover on your skin.

That’s where toner comes in, removing any last traces of what you don’t want on your complexion, and leaving it completely clean, refreshed, and ready for what comes next. Think of face wash as the macro step, removing all of the big particles of dirt and makeup, and toner as the micro step, getting deeper into your pores to get rid of all the smaller pieces of gunk.

And the benefits are worth this extra step: Using a toner can help keep your pores clear and clog-free. So yes, it’s a must-have for anyone with oily or acne-prone skin, for sure, but a smart pick for any and every skin type. Check out our full collection of toners and other skin care products.

How to use face toner?

All you have to do is wash your face as usual, then get to toning. Apply generously on a cotton pad and sweep gently on skin. Insider tip: you can also try applying the toner directly to skin with your fingertips and then sweeping the cotton pad. This technique ensures you get the most product where it matters—on your skin.
